Adoption Counselling in Toronto

Adoption is more than a legal event, it can shape how you experience relationships, identity, trust, and belonging throughout your life. While every adoption story is unique, many adoptees struggle with questions about who they are, where they belong, or why certain relationships and emotions feel so difficult.

Many adoptees deeply love their adoptive families while also carrying feelings of grief, loss, or unanswered questions about their beginnings. These experiences can exist together.

Understanding Adoption Through the Lens of Attachment

At the heart of adoption is an early separation from a primary caregiver. Even when adoption occurs shortly after birth into a loving family, that early separation can influence how the nervous system learns about safety, trust, and connection.

This doesn't mean adoption is inherently harmful or that every adoptee experiences lasting emotional difficulties. Rather, it recognizes that early separation may shape how some people experience relationships, belonging, and self-worth.

Understanding these attachment patterns isn't about blame, it's about making sense of your experiences so you can move forward with greater self-awareness, self-compassion, and more secure relationships.

Does Any of This Sound Familiar?

YOU MAY RECOGNIZE SOME OF THESE EXPERIENCES:

  • Feeling different or like you don't fully belong.

  • Struggling with identity or self-worth.

  • Fear of rejection or abandonment.

  • Difficulty trusting others or getting close.

  • People-pleasing or putting others' needs first.

  • Grief, loss, or unanswered questions about your adoption.

If this feels familiar, you're not alone. Many of these experiences can be understood through the lens of attachment and early separation.

How Therapy Can Help

Using an attachment-focused approach, we'll explore how your early experiences of adoption may still be influencing your relationships, emotions, and sense of self.

Together, we'll help you understand old patterns with compassion, heal unresolved wounds, strengthen your sense of identity, and build healthier, more secure relationships.
