As the end of summer approaches, the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) is set to open its gates once again. For many, the CNE is a beloved tradition, a vibrant mix of food, fun, and festivities that marks the final stretch of the season. For me, Rebecca, the CNE holds a special place in my heart, filled with joyful childhood memories that I treasure to this day.
Ice Cream Waffles, Free Samples, and Ferris Wheels
Growing up, the CNE was a highlight of my summer. I still remember the excitement of walking through the gates, the smell of fried food in the air, and the sound of laughter and carnival games. The ice cream waffle sandwiches were a particular favourite of mine—gooey, sweet, and utterly delightful. I could never resist the Food Building, where free samples of all kinds of treats were a lovely adventure for my taste buds. The rides and games, with their bright lights and cheerful music, made me feel like I was in a magical wonderland.
But amid all these delightful experiences, there was something even more special that made my CNE visits unforgettable.
Time with My Father
My parents divorced when I was young, and my father moved out of the city. We didn't see each other often, but the CNE became our special time together. Every summer, he would come into the city to take me to the exhibition. Those days were more than just fun outings; they were precious moments of connection and joy. The memories of holding his hand as we navigated the bustling fairgrounds, laughing together on the rides, and sharing cotton candy under the summer sky are etched deeply in my heart.
The CNE wasn't just a fair for me; it was a symbol of my father's love and a reminder of our bond. Despite the physical distance and the challenges of a separated family, those days spent together at the CNE were a testament to the enduring power of love and presence.
The Importance of Parental Time
Reflecting on these memories, I'm reminded of the profound impact that spending quality time with parents can have on a child. The CNE provided a backdrop for creating lasting memories, but it was the time spent with my father that truly mattered. As the summer draws close, it's a perfect opportunity for families to create similar experiences.
Parents, take the time to engage with your children, share in their joys, and create special moments that they will carry with them for a lifetime. Whether it's a trip to the CNE, a picnic in the park, or simply playing a game together at home, these moments of connection are vital. They help children feel loved, cherished, and secure, fostering emotional stability and mental health.
